A 1950s warehouse, cut into a neighbourhood.

The building had been one thing for seventy years. The work turns it into many: The Plant in Second Ward, a multi-tenant destination carved out of a single brick warehouse, with Crux Climbing Center — a bouldering and fitness gym out of Austin — taking the anchor space.

Most of the effort is in the parts nobody photographs. The roof was recovered and the structure stabilised. New structural concrete went in across the main floor. The interior was demised into leasable sections, so what arrived as one uninterrupted volume now has tenancies inside it.

Outside, the ground was rebuilt entirely — a full concrete parking field, a retaining wall handling grade and drainage, and landscaping to soften it. That wall became the project's public face: it carries a run of murals along the lot. And on the street corner, the old brick was brought back and opened up with steel shopfronts for boutique retail — the piece of the building that had to look like it had always been there.

Most of this project is concrete. New structural slab across the main floor, the whole parking field poured and striped, and a retaining wall doing the unglamorous work of holding grade and moving water off the site.

Old and new, kept apart

Nothing new here pretends to be old. The restored brick stays brick, and what was added — the panel volumes, the board-marked curve, the black steel shopfronts — is plainly of this decade. The building reads as a warehouse that has been added to, which is exactly what it is.
