Houston, Texas — Retail

A jewellery store is a lighting problem before it is an interior.

The plan is deliberately open. One uninterrupted floor, sightlines from the door through to the far wall, and collections arranged so they can be walked past rather than asked for. Warm metallic accents and reflective glass showcases carry the finish; soft ambient light does the rest, and nothing in the room competes with what is inside the cases.

Look closely and the showroom is lit in two temperatures. Gold sits under a deep amber wash that makes it read yellow and warm. The diamond wall is cooler and paler, so white metal stays white instead of going brassy. Zoya gets a room of its own — panelled, cream, lit like a drawing room rather than a shop. Same store, three climates, and a customer moves between them without ever being told they have.

Under the polish is a working building: LED lighting throughout, technology-driven displays, energy-efficient systems, and private consultation spaces for the conversations that need a door — or at least a corner, a mirror and two chairs at the window.

The main showroom hall: tiered amber chandeliers over an open floor of glass cases, upholstered chairs at every counter and the far wall of collections beyond

The diamond wall, lit cooler and paler: pale grey busts and white camellias behind glass, with two counters of diamond pieces set out on grey trays
06  Diamonds, under cooler lightHouston, TX
A quiet consultation counter in the corner: a stone-topped desk with two pink upholstered stools, a lit display cabinet above and daylight through the shopfront glass

The Zoya salon: cream panelled walls with lit vitrines and mirrors, a timber floor, and one glass table with two chairs set beneath the brand lettering

The shopfront from outside: gold lettering on the stone fascia above a colonnade, with the lit showroom and its glass cases visible through the entrance doors

The plan

Open, and kept open. Cases are set as islands rather than barricades, every counter has chairs at it, and the sightline from the entrance runs clean to the back wall — so browsing never requires permission.

  • Open floor
  • Sightlines
  • Showcases
  • Consultation
The open hall seen past a mirrored column, chairs pulled up to every counter
The cooler, paler light of the diamond wall against its grey displays

Two temperatures

The clearest decision in the store is one most people will feel rather than notice. Warm light where the gold is, cooler light where the diamonds are — because a single colour temperature would have flattered one and betrayed the other.
